Ink & Intent: Political Cartoons Unpacked – Exploring how differences in strength and casualties are used to vilify Israel

Many claim that Israel is in the wrong because it is stronger or because more Palestinian Arabs are killed than Jews. In this session, we’ll examine how differences in power and casualty counts are used and abused to seek moral superiority. Political cartoons, with their intentional simplicity and visual reinforcement, provide the starkest examples of such narratives–and a useful focus to consider how best to respond.

Dr. Shale Horowitz is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His research has examined international and ethnic conflict; the politics of international trade and finance; and the politics of market transition and institutional change. He is the author, co-author, or co-editor of five books and over 50 academic articles. His current research interests include ethno-territorial wars and Chinese politics. He regularly visits Israel.
