On December 1, 1955, an African American seamstress named Rosa Parks was commuting home on the Cleveland Avenue bus from her job at a local department store. She was seated in the front row of the “colored section.” When the White seats filled, the driver asked Parks and three other Black passengers to vacate their seats. The other Black riders complied, but Parks refused. The impact of this decision on the history of the civil rights movement is well known. We will also explore the impact of this decision on the Jewish community in the South.
