Mussar topic: Gratitude/Hakarat Ha-tov

When we are sensitive enough to notice that a good deed has been done on our behalf, we will, ideally:
1. store that memory
2. come to understand that we are part of a greater web of care and concern, and
3. in response, pay the favor forward, either directly to the bestower of the kindness or to others in their honor.
In this way, memory, a sense of gratitude, and loving-kindness become interconnected middot. That will be the focus of the lesson.

Standard Topic: Gratitude: Modim Anachnu Lach
Psychological studies have shown that feeling and expressing gratitude are important components of a happy, balanced life. There are elements in Jewish tradition that can help us to be aware of our blessings and to express gratitude. Expressing gratitude does not mean ignoring that there is pain and hardship in the world. It means making a daily effort to see that along with the difficulty, there is also good in life that is worth celebrating.

VIRTUAL GROUP:
Topic: Trust/Bitachon
Trust in others and in ourselves is an important middah to cultivate. In this session we will explore the centrality of the Jewish concept of trust in God, and how we best combine a trust in God (something outside of ourselves) with a trust in ourselves and others, so that it is not an either-or proposition. We will discover in this session how Israel has struggled with this tension between faith and self-reliance and how that paradox played out in its Declaration of Independence.
