Hartford Community Coordinator: Sara deBeer
Hartford Community Facilitator: Rabbi Donna Berman
A storyteller since 1978, Sara delights audiences of all
ages with her repertoire of international folktales. When she performs for
Jewish audiences, she combines her vast experience as a teller with her
lifelong love of her own Jewish heritage. Sara is also an experienced
classroom teacher with degrees from Yale and Bank Street. She has offered
numerous workshops for Jewish educators and can suggest ways to integrate
storytelling into on-going classroom activities or help religious school
faculties develop curriculum. Sara is a “Connecticut Performing and
Teaching Artist” (Department of Economic and Community Development) and is
affiliated with “Storytellers in the Schools” (CT Storytelling Center). She is
also a trained facilitator for “Familyread”, “Book Voyagers”, and “Literature
for a Lifetime” (CT Humanities Council).
Chai Mitzvah is sponsoring a new path for adults
interested in renewing their connections to Judaism. We're bringing together
artists of all ages and all of the various arts to explore how creativity can
connect us to Jewish spirituality. Sara deBeer is the group's administrator and
Rabbi Donna Berman, executive director of Hartford's Charter Oak Cultural Arts Center in Hartford, is our group's facilitator. We meet once a month to share
ideas, explore some aspect of Judaism, present projects to one another, etc.
(We're making it up as we go along). We maintain the Chai Mitzvah focus on
study, ritual, and social action, as well as the monthly themes, but all is
influenced by the art forms of each member of the group.
